Description
Hand-drawn network diagrams by artist Mark Lombardi mapping financial and political scandals — BCCI, Iran-Contra, Whitewater — revealing hidden connections of power. Lombardi called these works "Narrative Structures," structurally similar to sociograms used in social network analysis. Each node or connection was drawn from news stories from reputable media organizations. After his suicide in 2000, the FBI contacted the Whitney Museum to examine his drawing of BCCI connections following the September 11 attacks, making history when a federal investigator consulted a work of art for clues pertaining to terrorist financing. Influences included Herbert Marcuse, Edward Tufte, and Hans Haacke.
