Description
Walking-based art project by Francis Alÿs, a Belgian-born, Mexico City-based artist who describes himself as a compulsive wanderer: "I spend a lot of time walking around the city… The initial concept for a project often emerges during a walk." Part of the "Get Lost" exhibition. Notable walking pieces include "The Green Line" (2004), where he walked along the contested 1948 armistice line in Jerusalem trailing green paint from a punctured can, and "Turista" (1994, Mexico City). Alÿs sees himself akin to a storyteller: "If the story is right, if it hits a nerve, it can propagate like a rumour." His work connects to the Situationist tradition of the dérive.
