Description
Obsessive drawing work by Tom Friedman (born 1965, Saint Louis, MO; lives and works in Leverett, MA), a conceptual artist known for meticulously fabricated sculpture, painting, drawing, video, and installation. Working autobiographically, Friedman uses painstaking, labor-intensive methods to recreate seemingly random elements from his daily life using materials like Styrofoam, foil, paper, clay, wire, plastic, hair, and fuzz. He pays obsessive attention to detail, focusing on repetitive actions that become "almost like a mantra." His work fluctuates between the comical and conceptual, confounding expectations through startling trompe l'oeil. Represented by Lehmann Maupin and Stephen Friedman Gallery.
