Description
Map by Denis Wood, a geographer, independent scholar, and author of "The Power of Maps" (1992, which originated as an exhibition he curated for the Cooper Hewitt National Museum of Design). This map is from "Everything Sings: Maps for a Narrative Atlas" (first published 2010, Siglio Press; revised 2013), Wood's collection of maps of the Boylan Heights neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina that document aspects of everyday life — from jack-o'-lantern distribution on Halloween to radio signal strength to the paths of paper delivery boys. Each map captures a different invisible layer of neighborhood life, challenging the idea that maps should only show "important" features like roads and boundaries. Also referenced in the "You Are Here" entry.
